Matthew Sheahan reports from the World Yacht Racing Forum and Guy Swindells finds out what's in store for leg three of the VOR
Yacht racing is heading east and making a big impact as it does. Events such as the Monsoon Cup, the last race in the World Match Racing tour, are among those providing the centrepiece for the rapid expansion of sailing in the Far East. Boat show’s that attract over 300,000 visitors and include fishing competitions, match racing, music concerts and other festival activities are just some of the features that characterise a new way of thinking and promoting boating to populations that are new to modern sailing.
Tim Coventry is one of the industry’s most respected figures having been at the helm of Performance Sailcraft, the company that produced the Laser, for two decades and has been responsible for introducing sailing to millions of people around the world.
In this week’s podcast, Matthew Sheahan speaks to Tim about his latest projects and his vision of an emerging and worrying generation gap in sailing.
Meanwhile, on the eve of the start of leg 3 of the Volvo Ocean race, Guy Swindells strolls the dock in Cochin India and talks to Puma’s Ken Read, Green Dragon’s Steve Hayles and Ericsson 4’s Jules Salter about what lies ahead on another new leg for the event and one that takes the fleet through one of the most notorious pirate areas in the world.
