Leg 6 starts this Saturday, make sure you have the pace notes for this tricky leg

With 180,000 competitors in the virtual Volvo Ocean Race fleet, getting your nose ahead in the early stages of Leg 6 from Rio to Boston will be crucial. Do you hug the shore to get out of the tide but consign yourself to an upwind slog, or do you head further offshore, into the Brazil current but into faster reaching conditions?

How do you cope with the equator and the ITCZ and where’s the best place to join the sling shot from the Azores’ high?

In the May issue of Yachting World (out now) weather expert Chris Tibbs walks the course and explains how to plan for a complex leg.

There’s also a gate to get through and you should take a look at the official leg briefing notes.
