The long drag race south, Guy Swindells talks to crews on the longest leg of the Volvo Ocean Race
Two weeks into the longest leg of the Volvo Ocean Race the fleet finds itself engaged in a straight line drag race to the Horn. A first glance the racing might look like a procession, but the level of competition has taken another leap where overall race leader Ericsson 4 and Puma have been forced to concede their early 24 hour jump on the fleet as Telefonica Blue and Ericsson 3 catch up.
Despite having turned back at the start for 24 hours after hitting the ground, Telefonica Blue is now back in the hunt, as is Ericsson 3 that also started late after their last minute delivery from Taiwan.
In this week’s Shoretalk, Guy Swindells talks to Mike Pammenter about his jumping ship from Black to Blue as he sails this leg aboard Bouwe Bekking’s Telefonica. Green Dragon’s birthday boy Ian Walker describes a strategy that has left them playing catch up and Ericsson 4 Phil Jameson sees Fiji for the first time sober.
Aboard Puma, Rikki Deppe talks to bowman Jerry Kirby.
