GBR lead three classes at the 39th Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE 18/3/08
British sailors continue to dominate in three classes at the end of day two in Mallorca: Nick Dempsey leads the boards; Ben Ainslie the Finns; and Brits Paul Goodison and Nick Thompson top the 107 Lasers table.
The Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE regatta is the opportunity for many nations to start their Olympic selections. Therefore a lot is at stake for the competitors, with pressure mounting.
British Olympic hopeful Ben Ainslie scored consistent results with two third places to lead the Finn class at the end of day one, while most of the fleet collected up and down results in shifty breeze and big waves. Yesterday he posted back to back wins, and now sits 13 points ahead of nearest rival, Zach Railey (USA). “It was a little trickier out there yesterday,” Ainslie explained. “I think I just generally sailed better today.”
Three-times European Champion and Beijing nominee Paul Goodison is leading the 107 Lasers with two second places on day one. Ranked number two in the world, Paul is in top form and has set the pace for his close opponents. Fellow Brit Nick Thompson is currently second, four points behind his teammate.
Nick Dempsey also maintains his lead in the RS:X windsurfing fleet. He had a perfect first day with two wins, but today has Israelis Nimrod Mashiah and Shahar Zubari very close behind in second and third.
Racing in the Yngling class remains tight, with the double World Championship-winning crew of Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson in fourth place, just six points off the leading Russian boat, and a point away from the podium.
