Following her capsize and the crew's rescue, Cammas plans salvage
After the dramatic capsize of the French maxi trimaran yesterday and the successful rescue of all her crew, Franck Cammas is exploring the possibility of salvaging the damaged craft.
Groupama 3 had been heading north along the east coast of New Zealand to escape the worst of a violent storm. Close to Dunedin they gybed to head east again and been sailing at speed for two hours when the port float broke just aft of the after beam. This led to a chain reaction, fracturing both cross beams and the 105ft trimaran slowly capsized. There was enough time for all crew on deck to get below before she turned over.
Fortunately for the crew they were only 80 miles from Dunedin and they were airlifted off the overturned trimaran, all safely and uninjured, less that three hours after the capsize.
Now the weather has moderated Cammas is hoping to salvage the boat.
