Nick Moloney aboard the Open 60 Skandia hopes to complete his global challenge on Wednesday
At 1400 today Nick Moloney aboard the Open 60 Skandia was approximately 220 miles north-west of Cape Finisterre and only 460 miles from the Vendée Globe finish port of Les Sables d’Olonne.
Nick is expected to arrive on Wednesday morning which will see him achieve his mission of sailing solo around the world – albeit with one unscheduled pitstop in Rio, after losing the keel off Skandia during the Vendée.
With 18-20 knots of breeze from the east-north-east, Moloney is sailing fast upwind at around 10 knots of boat speed. Hopefully, the wind will shift more to the north-east today allowing him to tack onto port and head on a more direct course to Les Sables.
Although the upwind conditions add an element of frustration in the approach to the finish – the wind shifting to the north tomorrow (although cold) should provide a speedy arrival for Moloney on Wednesday.
