Megan Pascoe, who sailed as part of the crew aboard Skandia Commitment at Cowes last week, has been chosen to join Gipsy Moth IV on one of the 29 legs of her two-year round the world voyage. Megan is Hemiplegic down one side of her body. She started sailing at the age of eight and has been part of the British Paralympic development squad since 2002.

The United Kingdom Sailing Academy, based at Cowes is in charge of the selection process. Megan came to the judging panel’s attention last week while competing at Cowes Week with two friends who are also disabled. She clearly impressed them and bagged herself a place on the newly refurbished Gipsy Moth IV. David Green chief executive of the UKSA said:

“When it came to the crunch, all the team agreed that Megan has been an outstanding competitor during Skandia Cowes Week and we are delighted to be able to offer her the opportunity.”

Three of the six places available on each leg will be filled by young people who have either suffered major illnesses or have encountered difficult personal circumstances. The remaining places will be filled by a UKSA professional skipper, a mate and support crew.
