Weymouth is where you normally go to get shelter or wait for the tide. If you’re heading east the sense of relief once you duck round Portland Bay and leave the long and often bumpy slog across Lyme Bay behind is enormous.

You can get plenty of wind here whistling over the isthmus but it’s not usually that lumpy. But have a look at these photos from the salt-rimed photographers at OnEdition, who have been shadowing the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta there. This is really tough racing.
