Team GBR sailors Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield successfully defended their European title at the 470 European Championship in Poland. Finishing second overall, they claim the title because the Open Championship winners are a non European team.

Lying in second place going into the final day, Rogers and Glanfield trailed the Argentinean leaders Javier Conte and Juan De La Fuente by eight points. Despite all crews keen to race, there was no wind on the last day and racing was finally abandoned at 1324 local time.

Rogers and Glanfield started the championship well with five firsts in the first six races and remained in a strong position throughout the week. However, the pair found the variable weather conditions on the penultimate day hard to handle. Despite a first in the last race of the day it was not enough to regain the lead and the pairing finished the day in second position behind the Argentineans.

A delighted Rogers commented: “We are really pleased to regain our European Championship title, although we were looking forward to competing today as we were confident that we could have challenged the Argentineans for the top spot to win the regatta out right.”

In the women’s fleet, the world’s number one and French team women’s captain Ingrid Petitjean and crew Nadège Douroux sailed an excellent championship to claim the European title with a day to spare. Team GBR sailors, Pippa Wilson and Sheena Craig finished in eighth place with team mates Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark one place behind after receiving a disqualification and a black flag.

In the men’s fleet, RYA Team GBR sailors Nic Asher and crew Eliott Willis sailed a good series to finish in eighth place. Sailing in the Silver fleet, Callum Mac Donald and Stuart Bithell finished in 10th place, John Gimpson and David Steed finished 18th, Neil Marsden and Graham Nelson finished 19th and Luke Patience, Chris Grube 23rd.
