Postponements and continuing light airs for day 6 of Skandia Cowes Week 9/8/07
A ridge of high pressure from the Azores is currently sitting over the UK which means competitors at Skandia Cowes Week are in for extremely light winds over the next few days.
Not surprisingly the race officers have decided to postpone the racing indefinitely this morning in hope that a south-westerly sea breeze will develop this afternoon. Unfortunately the best of the breeze won’t arrive until mid to late afternoon.
Meanwhile competitors are still in dock soaking up the glorious sunshine in preparation for some tough competition later in the day and big partying tonight in honour of Champagne Mumm Ladies Day.
Out and about in Cowes today, expect to see hoards of VIPS and celebrities including the likes of Dame Ellen MacArthur, Mary King (British Olympic three-day event team member), Ben and Marina Fogle and the England Women’s football team (current world champions), Clare Balding (BBC sports presenter), Dan Snow, Tom Avery and Ann Daniels (Polar adventurers) and Hilary Lister.
Also keep an eye out for world record-breaking yachtswomen Dee Caffari who’ll be racing aboard the Farr 45 Henri Lloyd Cutting Edge.
Today is also the final of the IRC Class Zero Big Boat Series where ICAP Leopard and Alfa Romeo (winner of yesterday’s Round the Island Race) will continue their battle for overall honours. They’ll also need to keep a weather eye on leading lady Sam Davies however, who’s currently only a point off Alfa Romeo.
