A total of 28 entries were rewarded with a south-westerly winds of 17kts for last weekend’s RS800 Fat Face open meeting last weekend at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.

The majority of the fleet sailed to the favoured left side of the racecourse in race one. Rob Style/Ben Lister led initially, but taking a risk to find more wind, Ian Martin/Adam Broughton were in the lead by the leeward mark. Spod Olive/Gerry Filmore then took the lead with a perfect layline, going on to win the race easily, with Martin/Broughton second. Newlyweds James and Heather Ross showed married life is good for boat speed scoring a fourth place.

Race Two and Andy Cornah/Orwin Murray were early leaders up the beat. Pete Barton/Bonnie Moody rounded the windward mark first followed by Olive/Filmore, who shot into the lead with a lightening quick hoist. Barton/Moody recovered first place, but Olive/Filmore came through to take the bullet. Neil Baker/James Hughes timed their romp through the fleet to take third.

Cornah/Murray again led by a small distance from Barton/Moody at the windward mark in race 3. After almost the whole race leading they made a small tactical error and gifted Barton/Moody the race.

Sunday started with bright blue skies and wind gusting 28kts. Race four and Barton/Moody and Olive/Filmore led. Martin/Broughton hampered their chances by capsizing at the top of the first run allowing the whole fleet past. Eventually Barton/Moody stole the initiative from Olive/Filmore who capsized in one of many gybes in unpredictable waves.

The wind increased further for race five and the fleet clocked up some awesome pace downwind in the protected waters. Olive/Filmore started fast showing a clean pair of heels to the chasing fleet all the way to the finish. The race for third overall was entertaining – Martin/Broughton and Ben Schooling/Tim Hirst swapped third place with tag capsizes.

Spod Olive and Guy Filmore took an impressive overall win with brother and sister combo Simon and Jo Skinner winning the silver fleet posting a consistent set of results.
