Professional Windsurfers battle it out in this years first event on the world tour
Around three thousand cheering fans filled the watersports arena at the Londond Boat Show to see the final of the Professional Windsurfers Association indoor windsurfing competition on Sunday. After three days of intense action the final slalom races saw Venezuelan Ricardo Campello battle it out with the UK’s Ben Proffitt for the top of the podium. The absence of former indoor champion Nik Baker from Britain, due to a shoulder injury earlier in the competition, may have influenced the slalom result.
Frenchman, NIcolas Akgazciyan dominated the freestyle competition, somehow managing to land switch stance air chachos in the 70m pool. His technical control was amazing and he came away with the top prize. Robby Swift scooped second while 15 year old young gun Golito Estredo sailed smoothly into third.
Teh jump contest was the highlight of the evening with Josh Angulo stealing the show and first prize by pulling off a one handed back loop. Ricardo Campello put up a good fight, totally nailing a tweaked table top, one of the best ever seen.
The Moreno sisters were the stars of the women’s contest. Daida won the freestyle and slalom events and Iballa took the jump contest, making huge forward loops from the ramp.
The indoor event was once again a huge success, so much so that the Bercy, Paris indoor competition has been reinstated on the PWA calendar; it will be held in October. for more details and a complete results list go to www.pwaworldtour.com
