What can I tell you about Valencia? Well today (Monday) was a Saints Day and a local holiday and the morning was punctuated with fusillades of fireworks. The locals flocked to the water on the first sunny day after three weeks of unrelenting cloud and rain. And there was a flotilla of boats out on the water on and around the two America’s Cup courses, Romeo and Juliet, ready for the long-awaited first flight of the first round robin of the 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup, the knock-out series to determine the challenger for the 32nd America’s Cup.

The trouble is that no-one thought of telling the wind which at best was gusting 1. Cup racing cannot start until there is a sustained 6 to 7 knots and although once it rose to a dizzy 8 knots that soon faded away and after a postponement at 1405 the day’s racing was cancelled at 1645. But it was a nice day out on the water.

Phrases like grass growing or paint drying come to mind, except that today the grass seed was not even planted.
