Frers 47.4m Hyperion wins Superyacht Cup 2006 which concluded on Saturday 16/10/06
After a final day of mixed conditions on Saturday, Hyperion crossed the finish line of Day 3 of The Superyacht Cup to win the overall event on accumulated points over the three-day event.
The fleet headed out from Marina Port de Mallorca on the final day of the event sponsored by Pantaenius in the brilliant sunshine. With good breeze of 15/16 knots all the yachts started on a tight reach to the Ulysse Nardin mark.
The yachts powered down the reach, with Gliss and Sojana performing a spectacular luffing match. The powerful ketch-rigged Sojana with full sail up powered through Gliss to gybe round the mark ahead. As the fleet headed towards Isle de Sech, the wind shifted to the west, allowing the leading boats to carry kites almost to the mark, while the rear of the fleet were left with a decreasing breeze and a beat to get round the island.
Yanakee Too seized the opportunity to pull away and stay in the new breeze. With the rest of the fleet finding it tough to find enough wind to fill any sails, Yanakee II had left their best performance to the end, and headed back up the bay to cross the line first to rapturous applause from the committee boat. A few minutes behind, after sailing an excellent race, came the Frers 47.4m Hyperion followed by Metolius and Atalanta consistently well steered by the owner’s son who is just 13-years-old.
The event closed with a spectacular gala dinner at the Cases de Sa font Seca in Bunyola.See results below
