Having spent the second half of yesterday covering just 100 miles, Olivier de Kersauson and team aboard Geronimo have started to increase speed once again. The daily position fix taken at 2318 GMT last night put the Cap Gemini and Schneider Electric trimaran at a position of 50°36S, 121°40E, and at 0117 this morning they reported a speed of 24.5kts on an east-south-east heading.

De Kersauson commented: “We’re happy to see that we’re making consistently good time without smashing up the boat. I’ve always said: you have to make sure a boat is still fit to race after rounding Cape Horn. The real gains are made on the home run north through the Atlantic. In the far south, anyone can go reasonably quickly within a knot or two. A successful circumnavigation is won or lost on how fast you can get south and back north again.”
