The joint Artemis-Pindar Open 60 entry in the Newport-Bermuda Race was forced to retire ahead of the start of the centennial edition of the race.

Approaching the start line located between Castle Hill in Newport and Beavertail Point in Jamestown, the boat went into a manoeuvre and during the tack, grazed the bottom. Skipper Brian Thompson elected to return to shore where it was discovered that the keel bulb had incurred minor damage, but sufficient enough not to return to the race.

Chairman of Pindar, Andrew Pindar who was sailing as part of the crew commented: “Naturally, we’re all very disappointed not to be competing in the event but the crew’s safety, as well as looking after the yacht, is always our primary concern. With the start line being so close to shore it was prudent to return to assess the damage. Whilst it’s certainly a shame for all the crew, who have worked tirelessly to prepare for the race, I’m sure we’ll be back again – although I doubt I personally will make it for the next centenary!”

Meanwhile, Pindar’s second yacht “Pindar AlphaGraphics” skippered by Loz Marriott, got off to a strong start in the Gibb Hills Division, crossing the start line towards the head of the fleet.
