The north-east Poyraz wind that had blown continuously for the last 48 hours died very early on Monday morning for the second day’s racing at the Laser 4.7 world championship in Cesme, Turkey. As the sailors arrived on site they were greeted with a flat calm. When it was time to leave the shore the Poyraz had started to build and by the start it was blowing 14 knots.

For the first race for the first fleet the competitors split evenly after the start. Turkish sailors Cakir Mustafa and Ercan Karagun lead the Brasilian Ruy Guimares Neto and the Irish George Kingston down the first reach. The two Turkish sailors led to the finish and were joined by fellow countryman Ates Cinar who climbed from fifth to third as the wind lightened to 9 knots. Overnight leader, Milosz Landowski POL could only manage a 10th place. Milosz who finished third in the world championship last year said: “at 71 kg I’m too heavy for the Laser 4.7 in lighter winds.”

In the second fleet race it the same story for the first two places with Ive Bojan from Croatia and Onur Derebasi from Italy leading from start to finish. The story of the day goes to Philip White from Great Britain. White was third at the mid point stage of the race having had to previously take a 360 turn penalty for hitting a mark. On the final downwind leg he had to take a jury penalty for body movement and then a further 360 penalty for a second mark contact. Sadly he retired before the start of the fourth race feeling unwell.

The first start of the fourth race was recalled as the wind dropped to 7 knots and the fleet pushed the start. 10 minutes later the Poyraz had found new energy and had built to 14 knots which held for restart and remainder of the race. Cinar improved on his previous three third places to led from start to finish ahead of Landowski who once again showed his speed in the stronger wind.

Bojan repeated his third race victory once again leading Derebasi across the finish line.

At the end of the second day Derebasi has taken over the lead from Landowski. Cinar has climbed 2 places to the runner up position just ahead of Bojan who climbs four places to the bronze position.
