Chris Mayhew and Charlotte Ibbotson were the overall winners of this weekend’s National 12 open meeting at Aldeburgh YC
Sixteen National 12s travelled to Aldeburgh in Suffolk for one of the first open meetings of the season on 13-14 April.
Two races were held on Saturday in a cold, gusty northerly wind that resulted in a number of capsizes throughout the fleet.
Chris Mayhew and Charlotte Ibbotson (N3443), Ian Gore and Alex Harris (N3441) and Geoff Camm and Amelia Hall got away from the fleet in the first race and enjoyed a private battle which eventually went to Mayhew and Ibbotson.
In the second race, John and Mandy Thornton (N3468) capsized on the final run when leading by a comfortable margin to hand another victory to Mayhew and Ibbotson. Sunday morning appeared a little hazy, possibly the result of an excellent dinner hosted by the local Dragon fleet. In slightly less breeze, Camm and Hall, and Jon Brown and Guy Johnson built a sizeable lead from the rest of the fleet, assisted by one of the many gusts and enjoyed a private battle which was finally won by Camm and Hall.
Mayhew and Ibbotson sealed the event by winning the second race on Sunday from Brown and Johnson. In the final race, held in less breeze, Brown and Johnson sailed the wrong course while leading comfortably which left Gore and Harris to win and take second place overall.
