GBR Challenge has named 12 April as the day when Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal will visit the GBR Challenge base on Cowes’ Medina River to christen GBR-70, GBR Challenge’s race boat and the first ACC boat ever to be built in Britain.

Exactly what name will be given to the boat is in the hands of the 17,000 Blue Peter viewers that entered a competition to name the boat. The result of their deliberations, selected by Peter Harrison and a panel of judges, will be announced on Blue Peter tomorrow.

Her Royal Highness Princes Royal will name the new GBR Challenge yacht – the first ever modern America’s Cup Class yacht to be built in Britain – on 12 April at the GBR Challenge base in Cowes.

The name will be announced tomorrow on Blue Peter. 17,000 entries have been received for the competition, with Peter Harrison choosing the name with a panel of Blue Peter guests tomorrow.

GBR-70 was laid down on 1 November 2001 in Cowes with composite experts Jason Akers and Brandon Linton heading the 22-strong construction team. GBR-70 is the fifth ACC boat they have built together.

Come and see GBR Challenge at the RYA Sailboat and Windsurf Show on 2-3 March on stand H8 in the West Hall, Alexandra Palace. Visitors to the stand will be introduced to Crew Challenge and the GBR Challenge education project through a fun, hands on experiment testing hull stability. Children and adults will also have the opportunity to sign up for the Supporters Club and enter a prize draw. Don’t miss it!
