Yves Parlier surprised everyone this morning with the news that he is not going to abandon the race and has 6 to 8 metres of his 25m mast remaining – he intends to sail under the jury rig which permits him to sail with a 4th reef in the mainsail as far as Cape Horn (7000 miles to the east), after which he believes he might be able to build a large tube to add to it for the 7,500 mile trip up the Atlantic Ocean. Certainly out of the leadership race, this confirms his determination and his nickname of the Extra Terrestrial.
