Professor Andy Norris, an acknowledged expert on integrated bridge and navigation systems, will be giving a talk tomorrow – Wednesday, 13 April at 19:00 – covering the development of integrated bridge and navigation systems, their future, and how their use affects both the navigation of ships equipped with this equipment, and also the majority of seafarers in boats that may not have this equipment, such as yachts, fishing boats and workboats.

The event is free of charge, and open to all. It will take place at the Warsash Maritime Academy.

The talk is jointly organised by the Royal Institute of Navigation Southern Branch and the Nautical Institute.

The talk will concentrate on the evolution of the Integrated Bridge System (IBS) from its introduction in the early 1990s and its likely status in the 2020s, when it will have come of age, completely revolutionising the way ships are navigated and managed at sea.

It will also address Integrated Navigation Systems (INS) which bring together information and data from many sources and can form an important part of the Integrated Bridge System. The impact of future positioning systems will be examined.

The increasing trend towards approach to a work station approach to electronic displays will be discussed. In addition the opportunity will be taken to explain how leisure craft fitted with AIS Class B are displayed on a modern ship’s bridge.

The implications of IBS and INS for Captains, Officers of the Watch and Pilots will also be discussed together with their impact on small craft users and how it will affect their interaction with larger vessels.

There will be ample time for questions and discussion.
