Sidney Gavinet has been rescued from his 100ft LOA record breaking trimaran after sustaining serious damage during the Route du Rhum.

At 18: 30 CET (GMT+1), Oman Air Majan was reported as having suffered substantial damage to the leeward front beam and had lost her mast. With the port float under the main beam and given the serious nature of damage, skipper Sidney Gavignet was forced to abandon the boat.

At 20:51 CET (GMT+1) he was picked up by the bulk carrier Cavo Alexander which was en route to Turkey. Gavinet is safe and well and is in contact with his shore team via satellite phone. The bulk carrier is 840 miles from Gibraltar and is expected there in two days.
 
Meanwhile the boat is being tracked via its Iridium-tracking device and a salvage operation is under way.

The damage was sustained in what is understood to be modest conditions while she was sailing upwind in just 20 knots of true breeze.

As yet the cause of the structural failures is unknown.
