17 yachts are completing in the 2009 12 Metre Worlds - see images from the first day's sailing
Newport, Rhode Island, welcomed sailors for the 12 Metre Worlds yesterday (23 September). Competitors include America’s Cup sailor Russell Coutts (NZL), who is sailing on Kiwi Magic; Dawn Riley (USA) who has broken ground as leader of the first women’s entry in the Cup; and British sailors Harold Cudmore and Andy Green.
Divided into four divisions – Grand Prix, Modern, Traditional and Vintage – the 17 yachts sailed three races yesterday, in the 12s old stomping grounds off Brenton Point. To see some of the images from the day, courtesy of the International 12 Metre Association, click here .
