The last day of qualifying races got underway yesterday in Tallinn, Estonia at the 470 European championships in bright and sunny conditions with 7-12 knots of breeze.
Two races were sailed and it was the Australian pairing of Nathan Wilmot/Malcolm Page who sailed a perfect day scoring two first places, to move them up into first place overall. Although racing is close as Gideon Kliger/Udi Gal of Israel are tied on even points in second place. Dmitry Berezkin/Mikhail Kroutikov of Russia are in third place overall and first Europeans.
RYA team GBR sailed well in the conditions, Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield scored a tenth and a fourth place to put them in sixth place overall. Team mates Graham Vials/Dan Newman scored a seventh place and their first race win of the championships to see them jump up from 14th place overall to seventh.
In the women’s fleet Vladeline Ilienko/Diana Krutskih of Russia have extended their lead on the 37-boat fleet. Scoring a third and a fifth place yesterday gives them a 21-point lead over Janja Orel/Alena Orel of Slovenia.
Team GBR sailors Christina Bassadone/Katherine Hopson scored a 13th and an 18th place to put them in sixth place overall. Team mates Helena Lucas/Jenny Heeley scored a 23rd and an eighth place to leave them in 13th place overall. Josie Gibson/Saskia Clark are in 22nd place after scoring a fourth and a 31st.
The men’s fleet will carry over their race scores from the qualifying to the final phase and will now sail as Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets with eight races scheduled over four days. Racing concludes on Saturday 3 August, with the top placed European sailors in the gold fleet being crowned as the European champions.
