After a two week delay to undertake repairs, the Swedish Challenger is finally launched in San Francisco
The Swedish challenger of record for the 34th America’s Cup became the fourth team to launch its AC72 catamaran on Saturday. The ceremony took place at the team’s base on San Francisco Bay in Alameda.
“Today is a special day because our scientific creation is becoming a warship,” said team CEO Paul Cayard. “It’s fantastic. It’s been a long time coming… so we’re looking forward to getting out on the water and learning about the AC72.”
The team first attempted the launch on 18 October, but an early morning tow test revealed a structural issue and the boat needed two weeks of repairs, delaying the ceremony until Saturday at midday.
“We have a little bit of time to make up… We have some catching up to do,” admitted skipper Terry Hutchinson. “We’re going to sail as much as we possibly can and develop the reliability of our boat. That’s ultimately the goal. How many days? As much as we can.”
The team expects to begin sailing this coming week.
