The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club has decided to cancel the running of the Corum Phuket to Singapore Yacht Race

The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) has decided to cancel the running of the Corum Phuket to Singapore Yacht Race 2005, which was intended to be held from 8-15 January 2005 and serve as a prelude event to the Singapore International Yacht Challenge (SIYC) in 2006.

Organising Chairman, Kent Goeking says: “The recent tsunami tragedy and its huge human loss have made it inconceivable that the race starting in Phuket could be run as planned.

The organising committee is now considering how monies raised for the event may be best used to assist in the disaster recovery efforts.

Most boats contacted have indicated their sincere interest in the race concept and their intentions for putting it into their yachting calendar for December 2005 or January 2006 (exact dates to be announced later). This will alleviate the challenges that several boat owners and crew faced due to prior commitments during this busy regatta/holiday season.”

The Singapore International Yacht Challenge will be a long distance, non-stop coastal race from Phuket, Thailand to Singapore. The race will be officially for the Singapore President’s Cup and will carry an anticipated prize purse of S$100,000.
