Good Day at the races with three race winners on day two 29/8/06
The second day of the B14 Nationals at Lee-on-the-Solent started with a building north-westerly sea breeze on Sunday.
Race 3 got off at the first attempt in a Force 3 and overcast. The fleet split to either side of the course. Gutted Hedgehog (Matt Searle/Andy Ramus) led from the left to round first followed by 772 (Mark Watts/Tim Rogers) and Readycrest (Mark Barnes/Tom Pygall). On the run Readycrest passed 772 with Gutted Hedgehog led round the leeward Mark. Up the next beat Gutted Hedgehog extended their lead with the next four contesting the places. At the finish Gutted Hedgehog won from Readycrest and CSC (Chris Bines/Dave Gibbons).
Race 4 and the heat was up. The race was on to the left-hand corner. Again Gutted Hedgehog led, followed by 772 and Readycrest. Out on the right, CSC led but lost out on the run in to the top mark. Gutted Hedgehog led at the topmark followed by 772 and Readycrest. On the run downwind Readycrest broke out left overtaking 772 following Gutted Hedgehog round the leeward mark.
On the next beat the places did not change but CSC closed on the other three boats. On the run 772 and CSC hit the beach and both passed Readycrest by the leeward mark. On the next beat the first four boats started to close up with little to choose at the top mark. Into the Last run Gutted Hedgehog rounded first followed by CSC, Readycrest and 772. All four headed for the shore resulting in them closing up. Coming into the finish all four were within four boat lengths. At the finish, Readycrest piped Gutted Hedgehog, with CSC and 772 dead heating, CSC getting the nod.
Race 5 got underway with the bulk of the fleet again breaking out right. First to the windward mark was Gutted Hedgehog followed by Harken (Piers Lambert/Pete Nicholson) and CSC. On the run the fleet was compact with a few big movers. By the leeward mark, Gutted Hedgehog led from CSC and Ronstan. Up the next beat the left hand side paid again. At the windward mark the fleet had compressed due to the dropping breeze and wind shift. CSC led round the mark followed by Harken and Performance Rigging (Don Forster/Kate Forster). On the run Readycrest having come back from a restart had now climbed to fourth. At the leeward mark it was CSC followed by Harken and Readycrest. However, 772 rounded the left-hand buoy so enabling them to pass Readycrest on what turned into a fetch to the windward mark with a result of a broad reach back to the finish. CSC won from Harken, 772 and Readycrest.
Gutted Hedgehog was disqualified from race 5 for a collision with 772 at the start.
