After two days of racing, RYA Team GBR lead five out of the 11 Olympic classes at SPA Regatta in Medemblik, Holland. Iain Percy and Steve Mitchell lead the Star class, Shirley Robertson, Sarah Webb and Sarah Ayton the Yngling class, Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith the 49er, Leigh McMillan and Mark Bulkeley the Tornado and Ben Ainslie the Finn class. The British team are excelling in the windy conditions on offer with racing starting off in 12 knots of breeze, which built to 17 knots by the afternoon.

Particularly pleasing is the performance put in by young guns Leigh McMillan and Mark Bulkeley in the Tornado class who have taken an early lead, by nine points, from world ranked number one sailors Olivier Backes and Laurent Voiron of France. McMillan and Bulkeley are yet to win an Olympic class regatta but having been selected to attend the Pre-Olympics, will be looking for a good result at this event.

Team GBR sailor Paul Goodison moved up the ranks today in the Laser class, scoring two second places and a first moved him up into second place overall, one point behind the six times world champion and double Olympic medallist Robert Scheidt of Brazil.

A breakthrough result came in the women’s 470 class with Team GBR sailors Helena Lucas and Jenny Heeley scoring a second and two first places to put in the best British result seen for many years in the this class. They have climbed to sixth place overall.
