A team of four from the Dartmouth Rowing Club competing in the Atlantic Rowing Regatta ORSARR 2004 aboard Queensgate, their 24ft carbonfibre, Phil Morrison design are currently leading the 13-boat fleet. See previous news story here.
Although they are the sole entry in the ‘four’ category and are hoping to make the crossing in the fastest possible time, the main aim of Ian ‘Yorkie’ Lomas, Jason Hart and Shaun Barker is to become the first ocean fours team to row the Atlantic.
The fleet of six pairs, six doubles and one four, left San Sebastian in the Canary Islands in a strong north-easterly tail wind on Tuesday 20 January on their 2,900 mile race to Port St Charles in Barbados. The Dartmouth boys soon disappeared over the horizon making over five knots with Phil Langman and Yorkie Lomas at the blades and are currently 274 miles ahead of the British pairing of Christopher Morgan and Michael Perrens aboard Carpe Diem.
The crossing is expected to take 40 days.
