Top yachtsmen head for Dragon championship this weekend
The East Coast Dragon Championship will bring together a number of leading helmsmen from around the UK from 29-31 May 2004, in a five race series.
A total of 30 boats will participate in this year’s Dragon championship with 15 of those coming from the home Medway fleet.
Robert Sheppard, Captain of the Medway Dragon Fleet says; “We have a number of the top UK helmsmen coming, who between them have a host of titles under their belts. Dragons are a real classic of the yachting world and this being the 75th anniversary makes it all the more special.”
Among the hot favourites for the silverware is last year’s winner, Martin Payne, who is also the holder of the Citron Trophy and this year won the Iberian Championship held in Spain and Portugal.
Another front-runner is Rory Bowman, who has won the national Edinburgh Trophy four times in the last decade, Ricky Gillingham, the holder of two national titles and Graham Bailey who took third at last year’s Cowes Dragon event.
Local hopefuls are Medway Yacht Club’s Peter Dann, the 1995 Edinburgh Cup winner and Len Jones, the skipper of the most successful Medway boat for the last three years.
