British sailors have won five medals in four Olympic classes, including one gold and two silver at Kiel Week, Germany.

Chris Draper sailing with the 2000 Olympic silver medallist Simon Hiscocks fought off stiff competition to take gold on the final day. Scoring a sixth place in the final race in light conditions, Draper and Hiscocks took the overall lead from Peter Hansen and Soren Hansen from Denmark and world champions Iker Martinez and Xabier Fernandez of Spain. Team mates Alister Richardson and Peter Greenhalgh sailed well to finish in sixth place overall.

Double Olympic medallist Ben Ainslie won silver in the Finn class behind the 1996 Olympic silver medallist Sebastien Godefroid of Belgium. This pairing has enjoyed a close battle all year with Ainslie beating Godefroid at the recent European championships but this time it was Godefroid who gained the advantage. Emilios Papathanasiou of Greece finished one point behind Ainslie in third place overall.

A Bronze medal went to Paul Goodison in the Laser class who continued his run on medals adding to those won at Palma, Hyeres and SPA Olympic class regattas earlier this year. A final race was started on the last day but was abandoned when the wind dropped off halfway around the course. After twelve races Maciej Grabowski of Poland took the gold and double Olympic champion and six times world champion Robert Scheidt won silver.

In the Tornado class, two Brits lined the top three. Unfortunately due to the light conditions only three races were sailed but Hugh Styles and Adam May sailed consistently scoring a sixth, seventh and a first place to finish second overall behind John Lovell and Charlie Ogletree of America. The newly formed team of Rob Wilson and Martin Sellars finished third.

The 2.4mR Paralympic class was also present at Kiel and completed the most races out of all the classes. After fourteen races Jens Als Andersen of Denmark just clinched the gold by a point from Thierry Schmitter of Holland, with the 2000 Paralympic gold medallist Heiko Kroeger of Germany finishing third. A strong performance was put in by the British team who enjoyed a close tussle with each other all week, in the end it was Allan Smith who came out on top finishing sixth overall with Megan Pascoe seventh and Andrew Millband eighth.

Draper explained the weeks racing, “It has been a pretty funny one with about 5-8 knots all week which has made the conditions very light and tricky. After taking a month off it is really pleasing to come back and win this event and to especially beat the Spanish pairing. We now look forward to the Europeans, although the main focus is still on the world championships in September.”

Ainslie put his mixed week of results down to, “using the event as a training week and an opportunity to try out new equipment.” With this in mind he said, “I am very happy with how I sailed this week, I had a lot of things to try out and with the varied conditions I am happy to finish second.”
