First ever British leg win in Around Alone/BOC Challenge
Mike Golding, skipper of Team Group 4, sailed across the Leg 1 finish line in Cape Town, South Africa shortly after 1300 local time (1100 GMT), becoming the first British skipper to win any leg of an Around Alone race. Golding’s official finish time of 34 days, 18 hours, 54 minutes and 44 seconds beats the record established in the 1994-95 race by 13 hours 57 minutes and 34 seconds.
Close on Golding’s heals is the woman who previously owned the record for this leg, Isabelle Autissier of France. The skipper of PRB, Autissier should cross the line in approximately two to three hours. Countryman Marc Thiercelin, sailing SOMEWHERE, should arrive later this evening.
