The King of Spain, Juan Carlos II will continue an old Spanish Royal Family tradition and race at Cowes during the America’s Cup Jubilee. Juan Carlos, an avid sailor, has chosen the event to make his family’s return trip to the Isle of Wight.
He will be racing throughout the week on board the IMS 50 Bribon Telefonica Moviles, supported by Telefonica and owned by Jose Cusi – one of the most ardent supporters of yacht racing in Spain. Telefonica is the largest company in Spain and one of the largest communications companies in the world. The crew will include many of the sailors who were part of the Spanish Challenge at the America’s Cup in 2000, including three times Spanish America’s Cup skipper Pedro Campos.
Juan Carlos’ grandfather, King Alphonso XIII of Spain, used to sail with King Edward VII on board Britannia during Cowes Week when the Royal yacht was the most important part of the Cowes yachting scene over a long period at the beginning of the last century.
