It was another day of light airs at the Saronic Gulf Olympic classes regatta in Athens, Greece on Tuesday 21 August. The race committee made the intelligent decision last night that no racing would get underway until 3.00pm in order to allow for some breeze to materialize. One race was sailed by all classes, in 5 knots of breeze and temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius.
A good day for the Brits in the Women’s 470 class, with Josie Gibson and Saskia Clark recording their first win of the regatta. “They got a good start and went the right way on the first beat, they were eighth or ninth round the first mark and just improved on their position around the remainder of the course,” commented Olympic Manager, Stephan Park.
In the men’s 470 class, Andreas Kosmatopoulos and crew Kostas Trigonis, won the only race of the day, with one discard they are able to discount their 18th result from yesterday, to put them in first place on the men’s leader board, nine points in front of their nearest rivals, Evgeniy Braslavets and Igor Matvienko from the Ukraine.
Team GBR sailors, Nick Rogers and Jo Glanfield, scored a seventh position, being able to discard their worst result, which is a 15th they were in ninth position overall. Their Team mates, Graham Vials and Dan Newman scored an encouraging fourth position, moving them up into 11th place overall after three days of racing.
