The first RYA match racing event to be held off the Sea View Yacht Club in Mermaids took place recently in glorious sunshine and light winds, resulting in interesting and challenging racing for all those involved. The event attracted some young and talented crews from across the country as well as some international competitors.
Mason Woodworth got off to an excellent start right from the first race and proved hard to beat throughout the event. The light and variable airs made it hard to get all the races completed and the results were eventually decided on the round robin structure with the finals not being run.
Mason Woodworth (USA) won the event scoring 9 points, with Nick Cherry second, 7 points and Mark Kroening (NZL) third, 5 points. The championships qualified as an ISAF grade 3 event.
Mason Woodworth, said after the event: “A large fleet of challenging, evenly matched boats combined with an interesting venue and superb hospitality made a great weekend of Match-Racing – we are certainly looking forward to next year!”
