The first RYA matchracing event held at the Sea View Yacht Club took place last weekend
The recent Mermaid Match-Racing Championship was the first RYA matchracing event to be held off Sea View Yacht Club and qualified as an ISAF grade 3 event. It resulted in challenging racing for all involved, attracting some young and talented crews from across the country as well as some international competitors.
Mason Woodworth (USA) got off to an excellent start and proved hard to beat throughout the event. The light and variable airs made it hard to get all the races completed and the results were eventually decided on the round-robin structure with the finals not being run.
Woodworth won the event scoring 9pts, with Nick Cherry second with 7pts and Mark Kroening (NZL) third with 5pts. Woodworth, said after the event: “A large fleet of challenging, evenly matched boats combined with an interesting venue and superb hospitality made a great weekend of matchracing. We are certainly looking forward to next year!”
There will be an open day on 18 July for anyone interested in trying out Mermaids for a possible charter day. For more details contact the club secretary, Charles Rogers on 01983 613268, to make arrangements.
