Excitement at one day National 12 open meeting at Derwent 19/9/07
Six boats arrived at Derwent reservoir ready for a day’s sailing amongst the stunning Northumberland scenery, with 20-30mph winds.
Mark and Emma Simpson were first to the windward mark, followed by Howard Chadwick and Helen Nicholson and then Neil and Yvonne McInnes. The crews were then treated to two screaming reaches along with two gybes. Team McInnes gained an overlap at one of the gybe marks and took second. Tim Gatti and Katie McInnes struggled to get to grips with their newly refurbished boat, with Katie failing to find the toe straps on three separate occasions. The Simpsons took first place followed by Chadwick/Nicholson and the McInnes’.
The wind shifted shortly before the start of race two. The Simpsons and the McInnes’ were both caught and were over the line. Chadwick led around the first lap followed by Gatti . The Simpsons and the McInnes’ fought back in to contention and took first.
Race three saw the wind strength increase again. The Simpsons stretched out a good lead, eventually taking first place. McInnes took second place.
