John and Alison Cheetham won the National 12 fleet racing at this weekend's Filey Regatta
A fleet of National 12s competed in Filey Regatta as part of the Northern Travellers series and also for the 2004 Association of North Eastern Yacht Clubs (ANEYC) trophy this weekend.
With high tide coinciding with the time most competitors chose to arrive for the regatta, the organisers had a busy time marshalling the traffic, and a slight delay in the starting regime gave time for everyone to get rigged and afloat. Starting last on the ‘standard’ course (asymmetric classes were sailing on a separate course this year), John and Alison Cheetham showed a clean pair of heels in both of the races on Saturday. Philip and Helen David chased hard but couldn’t overtake them. Mark and Emma Simpson’s speed was temporarily halted when Mark Simpson took a tumble out of the boat.
Sunday saw more wind, and the Davids claimed race three which then put them in contention for first place overall, depending on the results of race four. Race four saw the fleet racing in much windier conditions: Bernard Clark and Richard Willatt found the conditions to their liking to take first, with the Davids’ not far behind in second, and John and Alison Cheetham in third.
