The first day of the Optimist nationals took place in conditions ranging from flat calm to over 20 knots
The first day’s racing of the Optimist nationals off the west coast of Scotland at Largs saw a total of 250 competitors split into three fleets battling it out over two races in conditions through calm patches and wet squals that blew over 20 knots.
In the senior fleet, Tom Mallindine of British Steel SC took the first race, and Joshua Metcalfe of Port Dinorwic the second, but with Joshua the overall leader overnight. First girl is Maria Stanley lying third.
Kelsey Suggitt of Barnt Green leads the junior fleet overnight after two second places. David de Boltz of Corinthian Otters lies second.
Three races are scheduled for a busy day on the water today.
