Steve Fossett's challenger is already well ahead of Jet Services record
Ever since Team Adventure’s abortive bid on the transatlantic record attempt, Steve Fossett’s PlayStation team has remained at ‘Code Red’ alongside Manhatten’s Chelsea Pier, close by the ‘Ground Zero’ remains of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre.
On Thursday, though, her crew alerted by a code amber and then code green alert, set sail on the latest attempt to break Jet Services’s long-standing transatlantic record.
On the first day at sea they covered 595 miles, putting them some 155 miles ahead. By 0600 GMT on Sunday they had covered 931 miles.
PlayStation is sailing ahead of a Low Pressure area in flat water, at speeds of up to 32 knots in 32 knots of wind. Navigator Stan Honey reported ‘for now we are able to stay ahead of the gale that we departed in front of. We are holding about a constant pressure of 1012 mb. The sky remains clear and the sea flat, which makes knots of boat speed.
