The crew aboard the VO60 Bank PBH have broken their boom and are currently heading for South Africa.
Roman Paszke the Polish sailor and his nine-man crew embarked on a fully-crewed global record attempt on 18 February. However, the crew have spent the last few days sailing in difficult conditions – strong winds and huge waves in the Indian Ocean – and damage to the steering mechanism yesterday afternoon caused loss of control over the yacht and the boom broke as a result. Skipper Roman Paszke commented: “We are sailing towards South Africa where we are going to estimate damage and will decide what to do. It will not be easy because the weather conditions are not favourable.”
