Fedor Konyukhov, one of the most recognised Russian adventure and offshore sailors, is planning to set sail today from Falmouth on his attempt at breaking the non-stop, singlehanded speed record on the historic route of Golden Globe 1967 race aboard his 85ft yacht Alye Parusa.
Konyukhov’s yacht has been moored in Falmouth for several months now see previous news story here while Pendennis Shipyard has carried out work reconstructing the keel, and fitting new solar panels. The boat is now ready for the off but will it stand up to the rigors of the Southern Ocean? Commenting on the challenge Konyukhov said: “My boat has not been tested in the Southern Ocean. Although I have crossed the Atlantic Ocean twice in this yacht, the winds and the waves will be very different in the Southern Oceans. That will be my biggest challenge.”
Fedor expects to complete his journey in 120 days.
