Peter Ogden's slippy Swan 60 Spirit of Jethou has been retrospectively pipped at the post and denied the New York Yacht Club Trophy at Skandia Life Cowes Week
Yesterday’s provisional results suggested that Peter Ogden, the man behind Computacenter, had scooped the prestigious New York Yacht Club Trophy, first awarded in 1951 to mark the 100th anniversary of the America’s Cup, with his splendid Swan 60 Spirit of Jethou.
Today, the race committee has admitted that they got it wrong and awarded the trophy instead to Richard Loftus’ distinguished Swan 65 Desperado. The reason for the confusion was the avalanche of 20 boats piling downwind across the line just as Jethou was finishing. In the confusion, the race committee missed many of the sail numbers.
Spirit of Jethou was instead awarded second place ahead of Adam Gosling’s Yes! T&G. She can however console herself with the Delta Trophy, awarded for her excellent string of results from Saturday through to Thursday.
