The Splash World Championships and Flash Eurocup Races were held this week in Portland Harbour, based at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy.
The Splash World Championships and Flash Eurocup Races were held this week in Portland Harbour, based at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy.
A total of 193 entries from as far away as New Zealand and America had entered for a full programme of racing, both in the harbour and in Weymouth bay. Weather conditions all week proved perfect, with a mix of sunny and cloudy days, and winds consistently between F2-F4 with one day seeing winds gusting to F6.
Splash Gold Fleet
A total of nine races were held over the week for the 83 entries in the Gold Fleet. The overall winner was Shandy Buckley from New Zealand, winner of the Silver Fleet last year in France, with Filip Pietrzak of Poland in second and Morgan Gutenkunst of USA in third. The first British boat home was helmed by Andrew Friend.
Splash Silver Fleet
The Silver Fleet competed in eight races. The winner was Agnieszka Cebulska of Poland with Claudia Juan of Spain finishing second and Alfred Lachappelle of Belgium finishing third. The first British boat home was helmed by Chris Schonhut.
Flash Eurocup Fleet
A total of 14 races were held during the week and racing was tight amongst the 37 entries. The overall winner by a clear margin was Erwin Veldman of the Netherlands, last year’s Splash champion, with his elder brother Stephen in second place and Raul Gonzalez of Spain in third place. The first British boat home was Ben Bainbridge and the first girl home was Hilke Harms of the Netherlands.
