At 1616 GMT today, skipper Kevin Shoebridge and the crew of Team Tyco were leading the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, 76nm into the 6,550nm Southern Ocean passage to Sydney, Australia. Their lead is less than a mile over Grant Dalton’s Amer Sports One.
Knut Frostad’s djuice pinned the 1100 GMT start off Cape Town and was the first to tack away from the shore, followed by Amer Sports One and John Kostecki’s leg one winner illbruck. Twenty-five minutes later, Jez Fanstone’s Team News Corp passed through the gate to the Southern Ocean first, 30 seconds ahead of illbruck.
Team Tyco attempted a port start and was always chasing the game. She passed through the gate sixth, leading the last pack of three boats. Since then she has settled into the rhythm of offshore racing quicker than the fleet and edges the lead. That said, with just two miles separating first to seventh, as they beat south towards the Cape of Good Hope, the leg has yet to begin.
