Weather turns flat as rain hits Cowes
As predicted by Chris Tibbs the weather here at Cowes changed from bright sunshine to overcast rain at around 14:00 this afternoon. With the rain came some squally gusts which temporarily created lively conditions for the 1,028 competitors heading for the finish this afternoon. Even before the rain before the rain and wind arrived there were some casualties including a Laser SB3’s coming together with a rock near Gurnard ( see previous news story ).
The rain has now stopped, but not before killing the wind, leaving those still out on the water struggling to reach the finishline. Those who were fortunate to finish already (by 15:00) include: The super-fastVO70 ABN AMRO One, helmed by VOR winner Mike Sanderson managed to hold off Benny Kelly and team aboard the TP52Pantheraand win on corrected time. Laser SB3 racing was incredibly close as predicted, with Russel Peters inSelden Seenand Glen Bourke inMustofighting it out for line honours, Peters eventually got the upper hand. In the RS K6 class Bill Masterman and crew took line honours inScooby Doo Tooahead of Hugh Hudleston inIntrepid
